Whiteout conditions caused a pileup on Route 1 in Presque Isle early Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Presque Isle police Sgt. Chris Hayes said winds whipped the snow that had fallen Monday, causing “a complete solid whiteout” throughout the region.
He said that caused 15 to 17 drivers to crash into each other on Route 1 south of the intersection with Craig Road around 1 p.m. “Shockingly,” no one was injured, he said.
The speed limit along that stretch of road is 55 mph, Hayes said, but “everyone was going about 25” due to conditions and those slow speeds likely led to the lack of injuries in the big pileup.
Hayes said it took about three hours the clear the scene, but the road remained closed because visibility was still near zero because of the wind-whipped snow.
