MONMOUTH — An early morning fire destroyed a house Thursday at 1082 Route 202 in Monmouth, near the Winthrop line.
The property is owned by Gene and Patsy Hatch, according to town tax records.
Nobody was home at the time of the fire, reported at about 12:30 a.m., and no injuries were reported, according to Chief Dan Roy of the Monmouth Fire Department.
Roy said the house included a main structure and three additions, with steel roof panels, which made the fire more difficult to fight.
While two additions of the building were not burned, extensive smoke and heat damage, along with a partial roof collapse, rendered the building a complete loss, according to Roy.
Roy said crews were at the scene until about 3:30 a.m.
More than 50 firefighters from Monmouth, Winthrop, Wales, Leeds and Greene responded to the blaze.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
