Skowhegan Outdoors will offer “Camping 101” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 10, at Coburn Park, 419 Water St.
Participants can learn the skills and knowledge necessary to have a fun and be safe while camping. Equipment from the free outdoor gear library will be used to teach the basics: tent and tarp pitching, staying warm and dry, camp stove use, keeping food safe from critters, and creating an itinerary.
People should arrive 15 minutes early to check in, dress warmly, wear boots appropriate for snow or mud, bring water and snacks, and wear a face mask.
Those who have their own tent, stove, or other camping equipment can bring it along. If needed, participants will have the opportunity to request warm clothing ahead of time provided by the Skowhegan Outdoors Community Gear Library.
This is a free community program of Skowhegan Outdoors, an initiative of Main Street Skowhegan.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
You can read more here about our commenting policy and terms of use. More information is also found on our FAQs.
