I applaud Geri Vistein’s column in support of L.D. 1265, “An Act to Regulate the Killing of Coyotes” (“It’s long past time to regulate the killing of our state’s coyotes,” April 24).
Coyotes are the primary predator in the central Maine woods. They play an important role in the ecosystem, keeping the deer herd at healthy levels.
The deer population here is excessive, exceeding 30 per square mile in most towns. A healthy population would average 16. Excessively large populations provide conditions favorable to Chronic Wasting Disease, a significant problem in herds west of Maine.
Large populations also affect the forest, as their preferred foods are often the seedlings of important tree species. Deer browsing can alter the composition of the future forest.
Think of coyotes as the hunters’ and the forest owners’ best friend, keeping the deer herd, and the forest, healthy. Tell your legislator that you support L.D. 1265.
