Peter Britton McManus

BELGRADE LAKES – Peter Britton McManus, 75, passed away at home on May 24, 2021, with friends by his side. He was born in Mississippi on July 4, 1945, the son of John Ambrose McManus and Joan (Shultz) McManus. He held the New Jersey record in pole vaulting for over 20 years at West Orange High School. Peter was a long-time resident of New Jersey and he spent his entire life summering on Belgrade Lakes, where his parents met on Great Pond at their respective family camps (Hathaway and McManus Camp). Peter moved permanently to Belgrade Lakes in 1985.Peter was owner of the Forecastle Inn and Sail Shop in Belgrade Lakes, and McManus Brothers Furniture Co. Peter was the founding member and race director of the Great Pond Yacht Club, and past president and 25-year board member of the Belgrade Lakes Association. He was also a sea captain for over 15 years.Peter had many interests and hobbies, he loved to refurbish sailboats, go sailing and also teach people how to sail, windsurfing, water and snow skiing, doing crossword puzzles and loved a donut from Day’s Store.He was predeceased by his parents, John Ambrose McManus and Joan (Shultz) McManus; and his brother, David McManus.Peter is survived by his daughter, Chrissy (McManus) Davenport; his brothers, Jack Ambrose McManus, Michael Conway McManus and his wife Karen, and Timothy McManus; his sisters, Joan Ulick and her husband Robert, and Grace Base and her husband Rick; and his nephews and nieces, Harmony, Brandon, Ryan, Theresa, Alex, Madaline, Katharine, Matthew, Melissa, Jack, and Rick.A celebration of Peter’s life will be held in Belgrade Lakes on his birthday weekend.
