Judith “Judy” Hince Squire

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Judith “Judy” Hince Squire passed away July 1, 2021, at the Yale University Medical Center in New Haven, Connecticut.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1936 in Hardwick, Vermont, but grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts.

She attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, graduating in 1958 with a degree in English. At Colby she was a member of the Tri Delta sorority and here she met her future husband, Russell M. Squire, Jr. Her son, Rusty, was born July 4, 1958, and daughter Elizabeth was born Feb. 25, 1960.

Judy taught English to several generations of Waterville youth at the Waterville Junior High School, teaching at both the Gilman Street address and later at the new junior high school near the Thomas College campus prior to her retirement. She loved her students and was passionate about her work. These student/teacher relationships were evidenced by all the past students that kept in touch with her and reached out even after graduating.

Judy was an avid skier at Saddleback Ski Area in Rangeley, Maine and she and her husband Jerry started a hotel there in 1962 called Le Chalet.
They continued to support their son Rusty’s skiing and he eventually made the U.S. Ski Team and was a three-time NCAA All-American.
They also actively participated with their daughter, Elizabeth, in Maine Hunter Jumper events and horseback riding.

Judy loved to fish on the lakes of Maine and had many great stories about trips to Moosehead Lake and to visit her son Rusty to fly fish in Montana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell M. Squire, Jr., her mother, Charlotte Anne Hince, her sister, Charlotte Hince Reis and brother, Lawrence Hince.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Squire Vigue and her husband Tim Vigue of Chester, Connecticut, her son, Rusty Squire of Bozeman, Montana, her granddaughters, Charlotte Vigue of New York City, Amanda Squire of Tucson, Arizona and Danielle Squire of Seattle, Washington.
