Members of the 1971 Augusta East All-Star team were honored on the 50th anniversary of the team advancing to the Little League World Series on Saturday on Ray Rivelli Field in Augusta. When they were 12, the team played on an Augusta Little League All Star team that won 11 straight games to win the Maine and New England tournaments and made it to Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The team lost a first round game to Madrid, Spain 5-0 and later split two consolation games there. It was the first time a Maine team had made it to the tournament since the 1951 Portland Suburban League did. The team was managed by Charlie Gallant, who passed away last year. The new scoreboard and sign had originally been scheduled to be dedicated Saturday during a tournament game but shipping delays and Friday’s rain storm postponed installation. The 1971 team was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017.
