Carl Leroy Getchell

WEST GARDINER – Carl Leroy Getchell, 80, of West Gardiner died unexpectedly at the Maine General Medical Center on Wednesday July 14, 2021. He was born on May 2,1941 in a little red house in Litchfield, the son of Irving L. Getchell and Elizabeth Straight. He married the love of his life Margarete B. Schmidt on June 28, 1963 in Karlsruhe Germany.

He served in the Army from November 1958 until his retirement in July 1978 as a combat engineer serving time in Vietnam. After retiring from the Army, he moved his family to Maine where he worked at the Auburn Mall in janitorial services. He, also, worked in construction along side his brother Reggie.

He was an avid fisherman often taking fishing trips with his brother Reggie. He was a fan of watching Nascar and spending time on his computer playing on Facebook. He was very big hearted often giving people a helping hand in their time of need. He really enjoyed getting BBQ at a restaurant he called Rooby Doobies. His pets kept him going. He took his dogs for rides to the beach as often as possible usually accompanied by his daughter Michelle and great grand-daughter Emily. He was the family mailman often delivering bits of mail that were delivered to his home by mistake to his grandchildren’s homes. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to him.

He was predeceased by his wife Margarete and his beloved dog Callen.

He is survived by his three daughters, Patricia Getchell and significant other Brett Gullifer of Scarborough, Suzie Shonio and husband Chris of Morrisville, Vt., Michelle Getchell of West Gardiner; six grandchildren, Erica Webber and significant other Tim Lowe of South Gardiner, Jason Marshall of Fairfax, Vt., Krystal Marshall of Montpelier, Vt., Patrick Heald of West Gardiner, Vanessa Heald and significant other Alex Parent of Augusta and Nicole Heald and fiancé Walter Bailey of West Gardiner; three great-grandchildren, Kamryn Baker, Emily Lowe and Quinn Baker; his sister Donna Getchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Litchfield Plains Cemetery on Saturday July 31, at 11am. Immediately to follow all are invited to a celebration of life at the West Gardiner Auxillary (aka West Gardiner Snowmobile Club).
