WATERVILLE — Zoey Trussell of Waterville has been selected from a field of applicants as the 2021 Joseph B. Ezhaya Scholarship recipient announced by the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce.
Trussell ranked second her class at Waterville Senior High School. She started volunteering at a young age, along with her sister, both at adult education with disabled adults and at Alfond Youth Center, distributing meals during the pandemic.
She assisted the swim team and drama club at Waterville Junior High School, and worked with the National Honors Society Chapter to organize a voting registration drive to promote civic engagement, along with many other projects.
Trussell plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono to pursue a degree in elementary education.
The annual scholarship was established in memory of Ezhaya, a community leader who was known for his generosity and dedication to civic engagement.
This $750 annual scholarship is distributed to recipients after the completion of their first semester with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. It will be awarded for up to four years, for a total of $3,000.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
