Eugene “Gene” H. Schmitt Jr.
LITCHFIELD – Eugene “Gene” H. Schmitt Jr., 73, passed away at Maine General Medical Center on Aug. 2, 2021, with his daughter and sister by his side. He was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, on Sept. 19, 1947, the son of Anna and Eugene H. Schmitt Sr. Gene grew up in Englewood, N.J., where he graduated from Dwight Morrow High School in 1966. After graduation, he enlisted into the Marine Corp and served stateside in California during the Vietnam era. Gene moved to Winthrop, after his time in the service and became the stepfather to Robert Baker Jr. and Elizabeth Baker-Robertson and fathered four more children, Eugene III, Joshua, Gabriel, and Katherine Schmitt. Gene lived in Litchfield for the last 30 years where he retired from being a precision machinist. He was a supportive dad and his door was always open to his children and family. Gene was an amazing grandfather to Kamryn “Kamy” Dube, Parker “P” Dube, Eleanor Schmitt, and Kylie Davis. “Grampy” loved his grandchildren very much and spent most of his retirement video and photo journaling Kamy and P’s school and sporting events and whenever Eleanor would have a game nearby, he would make it a point to be there. While Kamy and P were involved with the Winthrop Area YMCA Rec and summer programs he played an integral and indispensable role by providing snacks, photos, annotated videos on Facebook, and more. He was the first one to the field to make sure he could get prime parking and to get his equipment set up for the best results. He included all the children and enjoyed befriending other parents and grandparents from the away teams and graciously passed along videos and pictures so no one had to miss their children’s games. Everyone in the Winthrop community was his family. Gene always had a great sense of humor, a smile, and a listening ear. Although Grampy will be dearly missed, he surely has the best seat in the house with the bird’s eye view. He is survived by sisters, Roberta Schmitt of Augusta; Dorothy Best and husband Norman of North Whitefield; Maggi Berry and husband Wayne Sr. of Hollis Center; and brother, Ed Schmitt of Bucksport; children, Robert Baker Jr. Gene Schmitt, Josh Schmitt, Gabe Schmitt, and Katie (Schmitt) Davis, his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Eugene H. Schmitt Sr., his brother, Ernest D. Schmitt Sr, and stepdaughter Elizabeth Baker-Robertson. A graveside ceremony will be held on Sept. 2, 2021, at 2 pm at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery located at 163 Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care where memories and condolences may be shared with the family at http://www.khrfuneralhomes.com Gene generously contributed to local fundraisers and supported athletic teams and we would like to continue this in his honor through the Gene Schmitt Jr. Memorial Fund.
