Sarah Cross, Waterville’s deputy clerk, was recognized Sept. 16 by the Maine Town & City Clerks’ Association with the 2021 Deputy Clerk of the Year Award.
Cross was nominated by her clerk, whose nomination was bolstered by letters of support from the manager, tax collector, code enforcement officer, warden, and administrative clerk.
Cross has served in this capacity for five years and quickly made this position her own, according to a city news release. A born organizer, she routinely finds ways to streamline processes and routinely organizes equipment, supplies and storage areas. A quiet leader, this person is always willing to help other clerks in the state and region, along with staff in other departments, the news release states.
Committed to professional development and continuing education, Cross received her Certified Clerk of Maine designation from the Maine Town & City Clerks’ Association in 2019, and is in year three of the New England Municipal Clerks’ Institute.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
