WINTHROP — The Sexual Assault Crisis & Support Center plans to offer a virtual free sexual assault advocate training on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
The center operates the 24-hour, confidential, free sexual assault crisis and support line at 1-800-871-7741 for Kennebec and Somerset counties.
The center seeks volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of victims of sexual abuse in their community by responding to support line calls from the comfort of their own home, as well as providing support at the hospital when needed.
The advocate training runs 40 hours. Participants must be 18 or older and able to pass both a criminal and DHHS background check.
There will be 10 hours of outside class work as well. Attendees must live in either Kennebec or Somerset counties.
For more information and to register, call the center at 207-377-1010 or email [email protected].

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
