The Kennebec Historical Society’s December presentation will feature Author Mac Smith who will discuss his book “Maine’s Hail to the Chief.” The presentation is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Christ Episcopal Church, 2 Dresden Ave., Gardiner.

Smith will briefly discuss all 20 presidential visits to Maine but will concentrate on the longer visits to the Augusta/Gardiner area. This includes the 11th president of the United States, James Knox Polk, 18th president Ulysses S. Grant, and 26th president Theodore Roosevelt.
There also will be discussion of the reaction in the state’s capital to the death of President John F. Kennedy.
A Navy veteran of the first Gulf War and former reporter for The Bar Harbor Times, Smith lives in the Stockton Springs village of Sandy Point. He also is the author of “Mainers on the Titanic” and “Peyton Place Comes Home to Maine: The Making of the Iconic Film.”
His fourth book, “Siege at the Statehouse” is due to be released next May.
The presentation is free to the public, with donations accepted.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
