Elaine Marie Nelson

CANAAN – Elaine Marie Nelson, daughter of the late Robert W. and Rosa D. (Richardson) Hamilton, passed away from a broken heart and cancer on Nov. 29, 2021, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan . Elaine spent her last days at the side of her companion of 30 years, Ronald Gilbert whom passed on Thanksgiving. Elaine was born March 16, 1939 in Benton, Maine. She was predeceased by her siblings, Robert Hamilton Jr. and Betty Duplisea.

Elaine graduated from Skowhegan High School and Bloomfield Academy in 1956. She later married the father of her three boys Paul Nelson in 1961 and later separated in 1978. Elaine stayed home to raise her sons, Kevin, Randy and Ford, giving them her love and guidance. She made sure no one went hungry as she canned and froze vegetables from the large garden and wrapped and packaged deer meat from the fall hunt.

She later found herself working as a Baker at Barney’s Store and Restaurant on Sibley Pond in Pittsfield. People came from all around to purchase the baked goods and doughnuts Elaine created. She left Barney’s for a job at Solon Manufacturing in Skowhegan where she worked in production and quality. From there she was employed by GS Edwards in Pittsfield as an Assembly & Quality Technician where she later retired.

Horses were a passion of Elaine’s, she had several over the years and had many memorable times with Ford showing them at the horse shows through-out Maine. She also had many dogs and cats that she adopted and brought into her home. The most recent were Daisy, Pebbles and Lacy. Gardening of flowers and vegetables was another hobby that kept her busy.

Elaine spent the last 30 years with her companion Ron Gilbert, in Canaan. They went on many adventures together camping in many parts of the country. A few of her favorites were in Maine at the Pumpkin Patch, Balsam Woods and Lili Bay State Park where they spent time with family and friends.
