William “Bill” Charles Lyons

HALLOWELL – William “Bill” Charles Lyons, 91, passed away on Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, at Androscoggin Hospice

House in Auburn. He had been most recently a resident of Woodlands Senior Living of Hallowell.

He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on Jan. 2, 1931, the son of Stephen Lyons and Nora (MacFadyen)

Lyons and attended schools in New York City.

Upon leaving New York, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as a radio operator during the

Korean War. He continued his service in the Air Force Reserves upon relocating to Galveston, Texas, while working for NASA, then the U. S. Coast Guard. He continued his career as that of an Officer in the United States Merchant Marines. As such, he was a lifelong union member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates, and Pilots (MM&P) since October 1, 1967.

Locally, he was a life member (60 years) of American Legion Post 6, Hallowell.

Bill was predeceased by a son, Stephen Thomas Lyons and a grandchild, Baby McGinnis.

Surviving are his ex-wife and lifelong friend, Margene Owens of Manchester; son, Bill Lyons of Frisco, Texas; daughter, Margene Tremblay and husband, Douglas of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Mary McGinnis and husband Dave, of Traverse City, Mich.; son, Patrick Lyons and wife, Rachel of Manchester and daughter, Kat Koornick and husband, Jason of Roswell, Ga. He leaves five grandchildren: Sam and Alaina McGinnis of Traverse City, Mich.; Jessica Tremblay of Raleigh, N.C.; Ally and Austin Lyons of Frisco, Texas; and Zen Koornick of Roswell, Ga.

Bill was an active and dedicated member of the Catholic Church.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta. A graveside service will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester, in spring of 2022.
