Sandra J. Hammes
AUGUSTA – Sandra J. Hammes, 76, of Augusta, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta.
A California girl through and through, she was born in San Francisco on Nov. 20, 1945, the only child of the late James Switton and Sylvia Bornstein. She grew up in Piedmont, Calif., and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at California State College at Hayward.
Sandy had a passion for education and taught in many school systems across California, New Mexico, and eventually, Maine, where she and her now-deceased husband, Larry Hammes, moved in 1977. Sandy taught in Richmond and Monmouth before later becoming the Director of Special Education for the Winthrop school system and later for Farmington and MSAD 9.
Sandy was predeceased by Larry and is survived by their two daughters, Alexa (Hammes) Terry and Lindsay Hammes, a son-in-law Bill Terry, two cats, four grand-kitties, and a grand-horse, all of Augusta.
A service will be held in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. Details regarding a springtime celebration of life gathering for Sandy will be forthcoming.
