SKOWHEGAN — A home near the Skowhegan fairgrounds was destroyed Friday in a fire that drew a response from several fire departments in the region.

The call for the fire at 54 Beech St., which is off Madison Avenue/Route 201, came in shortly before 4 p.m., according to Skowhegan firefighter Chris Clark.

A man living there was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital but his condition was not known.

The fire was under control by 5:05 p.m., Clark said. Firefighters remained at the scene to put out hotspots and clear debris. No nearby homes were damaged.

A neighbor made the 911 call after seeing black smoke coming from the two-story home, Clark said. Flames were visible when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters used a ladder to gain access to the second floor soon after arriving, Clark said.

Joining Skowhegan firefighters in responding to the blaze were ones from Canaan, Fairfield, Madison, Norridgewock and Waterville. A Cornville fire truck also was seen outside the home.

No other details were immediately available.
