Frederick William Spaulding

MANCHESTER, Conn. – Frederick William Spaulding, DMD, 96, of Manchester, Conn. passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022.

Frederick was born on July 30, 1925 in Tampa, Fla. to Frederick H. and Helen M. Spaulding. He grew up spending time in Tampa, Fla. and Norridgewock. He graduated from Bowdoin College and Tufts School of Dental Medicine. He served as an officer in the Navy and Army earning honorable discharge from each.

Fred established his orthodontic practice in Manchester, Conn. To this day, many residents of Manchester remember him for straightening their teeth, and the teeth of their children. In Manchester, Conn. Fred was active in the Dental Society, the Rotary Club, The Conservation Commission and as one of the founding members of the Manchester Land Conservation Trust. He was a leader in the preservation of Case Mountain and Center Memorial Park, and a supporter of The Manchester Historical Society. He participated in a reading program in Manchester elementary schools and was a supporter of CAST youth theater.

Fred was a devout Anglican. He also attended several local churches including Emanuel Lutheran, The Salvation Army, and St. Mary’s Church. He would often attend multiple church services on any given Sunday. He helped establish the Anglican Church of the Ascension that now meets in Mystic, Conn.

A life member of the American Youth Hostel Association, he was an avid recreational cyclist and hiker. He was a leader in the Hartford Chapter of the AYH where he participated in many activities such as hiking and cycling with the blind. In his later years, he could be found bicycling on the rural roads of Connecticut and from time to time cycling to visit family members in Manchester, Conn.

Fred is survived by his children, William C. and Ruth Spaulding, Frederick C. and Victoria Spaulding, and David M. Spaulding. He leaves two grandchildren, Aaron and Sharon; and brother, David B. Spaulding.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks for the care that he received at Vernon Manor during the final months of his life. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 11, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 60 Church St., Manchester, CT 06040, (masks required please).

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Fred W. Spaulding can be sent to the Manchester Land Conservation Trust or Manchester Historical Society or dropped off at the service.
