I am writing to address Florida’s banning “sex” education for K-3, which , for some, may sound sensible, but remember this is twisted and people think that teachers are teaching sexuality and sex. What is actually taught in (many) schools is called personal body safety.
PBS is all about safety and teaches kids what is safe and what is not safe touch. They learn correct body part names and thus if sexual abuse is occurring and since the statistics for sexual abuse are astonishing affecting the victim (survivor) for the rest of their lives, this is a preventative educational tool.
We have taught PBS for years, it is developmentally appropriate and has nothing, absolutely zero to do with sex, sexuality, gender, etc… but that is how it is (mis)represented. PBS is very effective and has actually led to some predators being stopped. This is a safety issue and nothing more.
