Sitarist David Pontbriand will be joined by mridanga player Gaura Harrison in a duo called RagaFission at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at the Oasis of Music, in the downstairs chapel of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, located at 11 Ash St. in Lewiston.
Pontbriand began his journey with the sitar in 1973. His story is an exception to the rule, in that he is self-taught. His Music of Sitar is driven by an intuitive and emotive approach that is deeply personal, and yet displays elements of classical form and style.

Harrison grew up in a musical household with a kirtan tradition, in Santa Cruz, California. At 12 years old, he began his interest and study of Indian Classical Music through a Bengali tradition of hand percussion, on the Mridanga, drum.
The Oasis of Music is a weekly music series of performances of roughly 30 minutes, running from September to May. Admission is free, with donations accepted.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
