Arlington B. Philbrick

OAKLAND – Arlie B. Philbrick passed away peacefully at Maine General in Augusta on Monday, April 25, 2022, after a battle with cancer.

Arlie was born on Jan. 14, 1937, in Waterville, the only son of Harriet and Arlie Philbrick. He attended Waterville schools before joining the Army. Upon his return from the Army, he worked for the First National. He then moved to driving truck for Ladd Paper/Holmes Swift in Fairfield. In 1979, he started working at Messalonskee High School where he stayed until he retired.

He married the love of his life, Beverly Dudley, in 1962. They raised two adoring daughters, Penny Shorette of Winslow, and Pam Ellis of Parkman. The apple of Arlie’s eyes were his grandchildren, Stephanie Shorette of Lawton, Okla., and Karlie Ellis of Parkman; and his step granddaughter, Julie Groves of Clinton. All the girls loved spending time in Grandpa’s lap listening to stories.

In the early years, Arlie enjoyed bowling at the candlepin lanes in Waterville. He was an avid fisherman who was always looking for the big one. He loved having family BBQs so he could show off his talent for cooking chicken.

In later years, Arlie could be seen sitting in his lawn chair watching the cars go by and having friends stop by to chat. Arlie will be remembered for his special wit and Chex Mix.

He was predeceased by his parents, Arlie and Harriet Philbrick; his wife, Beverly Philbrick; two sisters, Ruth Ricker and Ethel Bates; and a special niece, Linda Douglas.

He is survived by his daughters, Penny Shorette of Winslow and Pam Ellis and her husband Bill of Parkman; three granddaughters, Stephanie Shorette of Lawton, Okla., Karlie Ellis of Parkman, and Julie Groves of Clinton; and a special nephew, Rocky Douglas of Oakland. In later years Arlie had a tabby cat, Wrigley, that was always by his side.

The family would like to give a special thank you to family friend, Dori Nadeau, for helping Arlie over the past few years. You had a special place in his heart. We would also like to thank Dr. Julie Phelps and the staff at Waterville Family Practice for all their care.

A graveside service with military honors will take place at 1 p.m. on May 9 at Lakeview Cemetery in Oakland.

Arrangements are in the care of Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland, where condolences may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at http://www.lawrybrothers.com.
