United Way of the Tri-Valley Area’s Packs for Progress backpack program is still accepting applications. The deadline is Friday, Aug. 12.
These backpacks are for families that live or attend school in Franklin County, Livermore Falls and Livermore. Those who live outside this area can call 211 Maine to find out whether there is a program that serves their area, according to a news release from the United Way chapter.
This program is sponsored by Franklin Community Health Network, Bangor Savings Bank, The Dugout Bar and Grill, Poland Spring Natural Spring Water, and Farmington, Maine Rotary Club.
Those who need a backpack for their student before school starts can visit uwtva.org to fill out the application online. If computer/internet access is a challenge, call 207-778-5018, ext. 1 for assistance.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
