A Unity woman died Monday after she apparently suffered a medical issue while driving a car and veered off a road in Albion, according to police.
Elva M. LaPointe, 93, was killed in the single-vehicle crash, reported at about 10:40 a.m. Monday, Lt. J. Chris Read of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement released Wednesday to the news media
LaPointe was driving her 2012 Toyota Corolla in the area of 505 Unity Road in Albion when the crash occurred, Read said. Her car veered off the road into a ditch and then rolled over, flipping and landing on its roof. Passing motorists called 911 and tried to assist LaPointe, without success.
Read said Albion Fire-Rescue crews responded and were able to extricate LaPointe, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This was a single-vehicle accident,” Read wrote in his statement, “and at this point in the investigation it is believed that LaPointe suffered some kind of medical event prior to leaving the roadway.”
