Mike Karagiannes of Augusta is a recipient of the Red Sox Foundation’s 2022 Mike Egan Volunteer of the Year Award.
This annual award is given to six coaches and administrators, one from each state in New England, who volunteer their time in their local leagues to provide a better youth baseball and softball experience, according to a news release from the foundation.
Karagiannes has made many opportunities for the youth in his community, and the foundation is proud to recognize him for his commitment to grow the game, the organization notes.
He not only coaches, but he also organizes and rebuilt a concession stand at his league that recently burned down.
He and the other five awardees were honored Sept. 17 during a pregame ceremony before the Red Sox played the Royals at Fenway Park.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
