John David Carey
AUGUSTA – John David Carey, 76, of Gardiner, passed away on Oct. 4, 2022 at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta, following a brief illness with Delirium and Encephalopathy.
John was born on May 1, 1946 in Augusta, the son of Earl W. and Madelyn G. Heald Carey, Jr. He grew up in and attended Gardiner area schools. He also lived in Augusta for a long period of time.
John was employed at various jobs during his life. The most noteworthy were Bates Manufacturing in Augusta for about two years. The second was at Maine General Hospital (both the old and new hospitals) for 45 years, doing custodial services. He received a commendation recognizing him for 40 years. of outstanding performance from the hospital.
John was a very kind, caring and gentle person. He was also a very independent and self-sufficient person who enjoyed looking at life from different angles or aspects than the norm. He enjoyed many long hours of conversation about politics, religion and social issues of the day with his cousin Jim Barnard. John had a life-long friendship with John Donahue. He also had a close friendship with Brenda Cloutier who was so kind to help him with some of his errands, latter in his life. John will be sorely missed by all.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the nurses, doctors and staff at the Maine General Hospital for everything you did to help John with his procedures and his care while at your facility. It was so appreciated.
John was predeceased by his parents (his mother died when he was only 6 mos. old).
