Leonard “Paul” Gregoire
AUGUSTA – Leonard “Paul” Gregoire, 94, passed away peacefully on Nov. 3, 2022, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care at Glenridge.
He was born in Sanford on Jan. 31, 1928, to Simeon and Laura Gregoire. Paul graduated from Cony High School in 1945 and served four years in the Marine Corp during the Korean War. On Dec. 31, 1954, he married Norma Maxim of Augusta and in 1959 they were blessed with their daughter, Jayne.
Paul started his lifelong career as a shoe repairer at age 13 working at Turcotte’s Shoe Repair in Augusta, where he started out shining customer’s shoes. Except for his four years in the Marine Corp, Paul was dedicated to his trade and went on to purchase the business in 1979. He worked until he was 76 years old when he retired and sold the contents of his shop.
Paul’s interests included playing as much golf as he could, going out to breakfast with “his crew,” attending his grandchildren’s sporting and school events, puttering around outside, and enjoying time with his family and friends.
Paul was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Norma Maxim Gregoire, in 1994, as well as his five brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his daughter Jayne Gregoire Leach of Farmingdale, her spouse David, grandchildren Amy Abbott and spouse Shane of Farmingdale and their children Grady and Finley, and his grandson Ryan Leach and spouse Marie of Bedford, N.H. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, and his companion Nancy Durocher of Vassalboro and her family.
A private funeral with military honors will take place at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta on Blue Star Avenue.
