Jon Howard Whitten Sr.

CLINTON – Jon H. Whitten Sr, 84, of Clinton, passed away suddenly, though peacefully, in his Standish home on Thursday, November 10, 2022, joining his loving wife of 54 years, Estella, in heaven.

A lifetime resident of Clinton, he graduated from Clinton High School in 1956 and earned his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Maine, Orono in 1960. He proudly worked for the Maine Department of Transportation, where it was his privilege to build and maintain bridges and roads for the residents of Maine for over 44 years. He took particular pride in being the Chief Resident Engineer on the Piscataqua River Bridge, connecting Maine and New Hampshire along I-95.

Jon lived a life of dedicated service to the community, serving on numerous boards and committees, supporting local teams and schools, and inspiring others to do the same. He was truly loved and respected by all that crossed his path. He was a member of many organizations, including the Brown Memorial Methodist Church, Clinton Lions Club, Sebasticook Riding Club, Maine Agricultural Fair Association, Salvation Army, The Masons/Shriners, The Grange, Eastern States Exposition, and countless others. Many of these for over 60 years. Perhaps his greatest efforts, achievement, and satisfaction came from his tireless work with the Clinton Lions Club Agricultural Fair, which started from his idea at the age of 16 to have a field day to raise money for new Clinton High School uniforms.

Above all, Jon’s pride and joy was his family. He treasured visits from family and friends to his camp on Lake Wesserunsett. He is predeceased by his devoted wife, Estella Leavitt Whitten, his parents Howard and Dorothy McNally Whitten, and is survived by his three children Jennifer Morrell and her husband Kenneth, Sr. of Standish, Julia Frost and her husband Daniel of Windham, and Jon H. Whitten, Jr. and his wife Chelsea Swandal of Scarborough, his 11 Grandchildren Kenneth II, Ryan, Amanda, Katelyn and Nicole Morrell, Jacob and Rachel Frost, Atticus, Alden, Jack and Gretta Whitten, and his cherished great grandchildren, Kolby and Kacee Morrell, Brantley Clark, and Everley and Miley Bettencourt; His sister and brother-in-law Prudence and Christian Nielsen and nieces Kristin Mollison and Sherry Decker.
