WATERVILLE — Lights Shine Bright is underway at Mount Merici Academy. Individuals, families and organizations are encouraged to purchase a light that will be displayed on a large Christmas tree in front of the academy gym through December.
Each light will represent a light purchased in honor or memory of a loved one, a teacher, a present or past student, or another individual who has made a difference. All proceeds will benefit the academy’s scholarship fund and enrichment programs, according to a news release from Dave Guthro, Office of Communications, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
To participate, visit mountmerici.org. The cost is $10 for a white light, $25 red light, $50 green light, $100 blue light, $250 orange light, $500 purple light, or $1,000 for an angel.
“The gifts will brighten the lives of our students as well as the boughs of our tree,” said Donna Jo Mitchell, vice president of Advancement for the academy.
Honorees will be recognized on the academy’s Facebook page throughout November and December, and the tree lighting is scheduled to be livestreamed on the Facebook page on Thursday, Dec. 8.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
