Elizabeth Betit
HALLOWELL – On Oct. 7, 2022, Elizabeth Betit, beloved mother, family member and friend, lost her battle with cancer and passed away. The daughter of Joseph and Jeannette Betit, she was born on Jan. 13, 1956, in Augusta.
Liz is survived by her daughter, Brianna Martin and her significant other, Ron Swan of West Gardiner; her brother David of Augusta; her sister-in-law Debbie of Brunswick; her nieces, Darcee and her spouse Benji Adams (Camden and Eliot) of Farmingdale, Jessica of Gardiner, her nephews, Jamie and spouse Meredith Jensen (Amelia, Brandon and Molly) of Athens, Ohio, C.J. and his spouse Laura (Alex) of Fort Fairfield, Chris of Brunswick; and many cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, Paul Betit and Eddie Betit.
Liz was a very vibrant soul who loved helping others and enjoying life to the fullest. She graduated from University of Maine at Farmington with a BA in Special Education and worked in the public school system for over 45 years. She touched many lives in her work as a Special Ed teacher and later at Child Development Services.
In 1976 Liz and Mark Kimball opened Earthy Delights a Maine crafts and Jewelry shop in Hallowell, which she eventually purchased from the early 2000’s until 2008. It was one of her pride and joys in life. Some may remember her lighting up the big tree in front of the store every Christmas.
She loved to garden and was known for having a green thumb. She was best known for her love of music, art and dancing. She was a member of a local 80’s band, “The Fleshapoids” whose irreverent original songs and creative costumes even made an appearance on the Dr Demento radio show. Liz also performed with The Dani Tribesman, a reggae band featuring some of the same musicians. Liz’s love of music later led her to become editor and writer for a newspaper “The Hallowell Record” back in the mid 2000’s.
She had an amazing way with words and would often share her views on many platforms. She was a fighter for everyone’s rights and she would often attend protests and rallies. She considered Hallowell her home where she supported many local musicians, most of whom were life-long friends from childhood. She loved to dance and was often seen around town dancing on Friday nights with all her beloved fellow Hallowell family.
A celebration of Liz’s life will be held sometime in May 2023 in Hallowell. An announcement with full details will be made over the coming months. Arrangements are in the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330. Condolences, stories, and photos may be shared by visiting http://www.plummerfh.com.
