Richard Alan Amero Sr.

MONMOUTH – Richard Alan Amero, Sr., 83, of Monmouth passed away at his home on Dec. 5, 2022. Dick, as he was known, was born on May 16, 1939, in Rumford, the son of Everett Amero and Priscilla (Plante) Amero.

At an early age his family moved to Lewiston where they resided until his father returned from the Army at which time they moved to Livermore Falls. Dick attended Livermore Falls Elementary School and graduated from Livermore Falls High School with the Class of 1957. After graduation Dick went to work driving the State bookmobile until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on October 4, 1961. During his time in the USA, he was stationed in Germany, Taipei, Formosa, and Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, N.H. and was honorably discharged in October of 1965. During his tours of duty, he had the pleasure of meeting Chiang Kai-shek, Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, and Allen Ginsberg.

Upon his return to the states, Dick once again drove the bookmobile for a short time and then was employed by International Paper Company for 22 years. At mid-life Dick embarked on a new career as a Consumer Weights and Measures Protection Inspector for the State of Maine and enjoyed meeting with people throughout the state. In 1990 he was named Inspector of the Year. On Dec. 11, 1965, he married Patricia (Pat) Hutchinson of Monmouth, they were looking forward to celebrating their 57th anniversary in six days. Dick and Pat resided in the same house on Berry Road in Monmouth for 54 years.

Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing with his favorite camping place being Parlin Pond in Jackman with Bill and Holly and Erwin at Loon Echo Campground. He had many fond memories of the time he spent there, especially with his grandson Avery. His granddaughter, Madalyn, also enjoyed fishing with “Papa”, but eating at the Red Barn with him was always at the head of the list. Dick thoroughly enjoyed supporting the Monmouth Mustangs and Forest Hills Tigers teams and Friday mornings with the “Breakfast Crew”.

Dick was an avid reader and amassed an impressive collection of early Maine authors. Dick and Pat also enjoyed visiting antique shops, and, as he would say, “bringing home something else we didn’t need”. Before his sons became involved in sports and activities, Dick was a member of the Monmouth Fire Department, Monmouth Lions Club, and Monmouth Planning Board.

Dick is survived by his wife Pat Amero of Monmouth; his sons, Richard (Rick) Alan Amero, Jr. and his wife Elaine of Benton, Anthony Everett Amero and his wife Ami of Jackman; grandson Avery Amero of North Monmouth, granddaughter Madalyn Amero of Portland; and his extended family, grandson, Colby Bartlett of Benton, granddaughter, Bethany Wight; and great granddaughter Elliana Wight; brothers James Amero and companion Mary of Watertown, Tenn., Mark Amero and his wife Marion of Jay, sister Ann Marie Blake and husband Paul of Poland; and close friends, who are like family, Roger and Susan Bisson of Monmouth.

He was predeceased by his parents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral service with Military Honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, at the BRAGDON-FINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 707 Main Street, Monmouth, Maine. Visiting hours will be held from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, at the funeral home. Interment at Monmouth Ridge Cemetery, Monmouth, Maine.
