HARTLAND – Elwin Warren Littlefield, 86, died Dec. 7, 2022. He was born Feb. 20, 1936 in Hartland, a son of Alton and Helen (Ham) Littlefield.
He graduated from Hartland Academy, Class of 1954 and received an Associate’s Degree in Electrical work from S.M.V.T.I. He served in the U. S. Army and was employed at Snowflake Canning in Hartland. Elwin determined that “that machine is not going to control me” and with his brother-in-law Phil Bowman established the contracting firm of Bowman and Littlefield in the early 60’s. At first they built houses but as the business grew, they started commercial and industrial projects including schools and banks.
He later established E. W. Littlefield in 1986 with his sons Dana and Dwayne where they continued commercial construction. Elwin took great pride in providing a quality product at a fair price. He was a determined, driven and highly motivated workaholic. His days started early and ended late usually with a cocktail or glass of wine on ice with his wife.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Corinthian #95, past president of Smokey’s Angels Snowmobile Club, a past school board member of SAD #48, past selectman for the Town of Hartland serving also on the Planning and Appeals Boards. He served on the Board of Directors of the Hartland Public Library and was co-chairman of the fund raising committee of the Irving Tanning Community Center. Elwin was also named Citizen of the Year for the Town of Hartland in 1989.
Outside of work his passion was the outdoors especially hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. His many trips took him to northern Maine, New Brunswick and Quebec with his lifelong friends Tommy Smith, Bob Veneziano, Bob Shibley (deceased) and Hoyt Hall (deceased). Elwin loved family gatherings, especially Sunday morning breakfast at the camp on Great Moose Lake. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and accomplish their dreams and goals.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Christie (Hayden) Littlefield; his children, Dana and wife MaryBeth of Hartland, Dwayne and wife Sue of Newport, Darcy and husband Ronny Rollins of Pittsfield, Dwight and wife Kristie of Sidney; two brothers, Edwin and wife Hazel and Elmer and wife Beatrice, all of Hartland; two sisters, Ethelyn and husband Philip Bowman and Esther Butler, all of St. Albans; his brother-in-law Harvey and wife Mary Sue Hayden of Farmington; seven grandchildren; one great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
Elwin was predeceased by a sister Eleanor Lawrence; and a grandson Adam.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Irving Tanning Community Center in Hartland with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating.
