CHINA — A house in Weeks Mills was destroyed by a fire Thursday that drew firefighters from surrounding communities, officials said.
South China Fire Chief Richard Morse said no one was at the single-family house at 79 Back Deer Hill Road when flames broke out. He also said there was no indication of how the fire had begun.
“We’ll probably never know,” Morse said. “The building was totally destroyed.”
Morse said firefighters from Vassalboro, Palermo, Somerville and all three China fire departments fought the flames for more than four hours.
China property records indicate the house belonged to Peter and Linda Bako, and the building and land are valued at $108,700.
Morse said he was filling in for Chief William Van Wickler of the Weeks Mills Fire Department, who was out of town.
