Mary O. Roode

SKOWHEGAN – Mary O. Roode, 89, of Skowhegan, passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2022 with family by her side. She was born Feb. 3, 1933 in Anson, to Carlton and Florence Collins.

She attended Anson and Bingham Schools. In 1955 she married the love of her life, John Roode and raised five boys and one girl.

Mary worked most of her life in shoe shops, working at Medwed Shoe and Norwalk Shoe before she retired in 1996. Mary was always very outgoing and loved to go dancing at Melody Ranch on Friday or Saturday nights. She loved to play the piano at dances as well as the accordion on occasion.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Carlton in 1957 and Florence in 1996. Her husband John passed away in 1995 and her son Richard passed in 2018.

She is survived by her oldest son, David Johnson and his wife Cherry of Embden, her son John Roode and his wife Heidi in Cornish, her son Edward Roode of Skowhegan, her daughter Julie Grover and husband Galen, whom took care of her during her last few months of her life, and her son Michael Roode of Skowhegan. She leaves numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday Jan. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. with a Funeral Service beginning at 3 p.m. both at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. Graveside services will be held in the Spring at Maine Veterans Cemetery, where she will rest beside John.
