Jay Allen Cumber

FAYETTE- Jay Allen Cumber, 61, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023 at the Alfond Center For Health, Augusta, from complications arising from his recent cancer diagnosis.

He was born August 13, 1961 in Gowanda, New York, the son of Rodney Cumber the late Jeanette (Wheeler) Cumber.

Jay graduated from Winthrop High School before earning his Associates degree from Central Maine Community College. While in high school, Jay started working for Dorothy Egg Farms in Winthrop, where he remained for several years. Later, he worked at Smith’s Garage before finding employment with Aetna Pump, both of Winthrop. The last of his career was spent as a truck driver, first with New England Motor Freight for 30 years, and then Hartt Trucking and Yellow Freight Company.

An avid outdoorsman, Jay loved hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling at his camp he had for years on Portage Lake. He also got a lot of enjoyment from watching football and stock car racing on television.

Jay was extremely pleased with the doctors, nurses and CNA’s at the Alfond Center For Cancer Care and Alfond Center For Health who cared for him throughout his illness.

Jay is survived by his wife, Liz, of Fayette; his father and stepmother, Rodney and Irene Cumber of Winthrop; his two brothers, Lee of Monmouth and Guy of Mountain Home, Idaho; his stepchildren, Luke and Ashley Patry along with two stepgrandchildren and several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

An informal celebration of life will be Saturday, January 28, from 3-5 p.m. at the American Legion Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. Post #40, Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
