BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Christina Wendy Mahoney, 82, died Dec. 11, 2022, at the Wealshire of Bloomington, Minn., after an extended illness.

She was born in Warrington, England on June 16, 1940, the daughter of Harold and Edith Scholes. She was the second youngest of five siblings – the “famous five” or “fantastic five”, as they were known by other family members. After graduating from high school and working a couple of office jobs in Warrington, Wendy learned that English secretaries were apparently all the rage in America, and applied to a work-abroad program in Washington, DC. She was thrilled to be accepted. Although she later said the idea of leaving home was terrifying, the thought of seeing America was equally exciting.

While in Washington, she met a handsome Georgetown Law student named Gerry Mahoney, and the two soon fell in love. Although Gerry would later claim they met through a gathering of friends at the Playboy Club, Wendy always insisted this was not true. She did, however, admit to stealing him from another girl. They were married for 53 years.

After marriage, Gerry’s work took them to Philadelphia, Boston and, finally, Maine, in 1973, where the two purchased a historic property on Granite Hill in Hallowell. They lived there until 2020. While in Maine, Wendy accumulated a vast circle of friends, worked for years at a local company named Maine Tomorrow, and was active in Hallowell’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law, Kate and Glen Varns of Minneapolis, Minn., and her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Laurie Mahoney of Cary, N.C.

She will be greatly missed.
