GUILFORD — A Skowhegan man died this week when his pickup truck was involved in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer, the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
Michael Steward, 64, was killed in the collision just before 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from Sheriff Robert Young.
Steward was driving the pickup south on Route 15, near the intersection with Blaine Avenue, when the pickup veered into the opposite lane and into oncoming traffic.
Steward was the only occupant of the pickup. The tractor-trailer was owned by Hammond Lumber and loaded with plywood. It was driven by Frank Walker, 64, of Sidney. Walker was not injured in the crash and both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
Young said there were multiple witnesses to the collision, and his department is investigating why Steward’s pickup crossed the centerline. The sheriff’s office was assisted by Maine State Police, Dover-Foxcroft police, Guilford fire personnel and Northern Light Mayo Ambulance.
