All of the state’s $450 relief checks have now been sent out to Maine taxpayers.

The final checks were sent out on Thursday and all of the 876,000 eligible Maine taxpayers should soon have them in hand.

The checks are intended to help taxpayers pay their heating bills during a period of rising energy costs. They were paid for with surplus tax revenues and approved as part of the emergency $473 million heating aid bill signed by Gov. Janet Mills this year.

The payments were sent to individuals who paid taxes in 2021 and earned less than $100,000 and joint filers who earned less than $200,000.

Taxpayers who have not received checks can check the status of their payments on the state’s emergency relief payment portal.
