WATERVILLE — “A Breath of Life” is scheduled to be screened at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at the Maine Film Center, 93 Main St.

The event is followed by a Q&A with local trans activists and Colby students.

The film features Lucy, a 96-year-old (a)typical Italian grandmother. Despite her age, she is still lucid and sassy. Lucy is the oldest transsexual woman in Italy and among the few who survived Dachau concentration camp, according to a news release from the film center.

Her life offers the opportunity to reflect on a series of ongoing debates, including gender identity, transphobia, and the fight for civil rights. The film retraces Lucy’s life: her childhood, her experience as a soldier during World War II, and her life as a trans woman. Lucy’s story represents the history of the 1900s. Her stormy life events are a metaphor for a humanity that does not give up and treasures memory as the most important gift in history and as an invaluable starting point.

The film is in Italian with English subtitles.

Admission is free; the event is sponsored by the Colby Department of French & Italian Studies.
