James O. French

AUGUSTA – James O. French, 99, passed away on April 2, 2023 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. Jim was born in Waterville, the son of Florence M. French and raised by his grandparents Bert and Sadie Tuttle. He attended Waterville schools.

In 1941, Jim married Priscilla M. Lunt and they had three sons, Bill, Bob, and Don. He joined the army at the end of WWII and served in France and Germany and received the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945.

For over 40 years, Jim worked at Farrar Brown Company in Waterville as an automotive machinist. In 1961, He married Marion “Bo” Grivois and they enjoyed going camping and taking trips in their RV to Florida, Alaska, and Canada. Over the years, Jim looked forward to going hunting and fishing with his sons and his best friend, Bernard Ladd.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Marion; and his grandson, Matthew French; and his stepson-in-law, Russell Williams.

He is survived by his three sons and their families, Bill and wife Linda and son Jason; Bob and daughter Laurie and son Bill; Don and wife Jeanne and daughters Sue and Deb; stepdaughter Sandra Williams and her children Jody, Kim, Irene, Marion and Russ; many great-grandchildren; and his nephew, Mike Thurston.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and the staff at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta for the excellent care given to their father.

Jim will be buried at the Maine Veterans Cemetery on Mount Vernon Road, Augusta at a later date. A memorial service will be held later in the spring.
