Sara E. Harriman
MT. VERNON – Sara E. Harriman, 82, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2023, with her loving family by her side. She was born on June 11, 1940, in Augusta to the late Frank and Mildred Wood.
Sara graduated from Cony High School in 1957. She then went on to her first job at the Maine Department of Transportation where she met her husband, Dan. They were married in 1960 and shortly thereafter started their family. After she raised their children, she went to work at the Superintendent’s Office for Maranacook School and left there after a period of time to go on to be the Secretary at Mt. Vernon Elementary School.
In the 63 years that she and her husband were together, Sara learned how to be a farmer’s wife by helping to raise Black Angus beef cattle. She also learned how to drive a truck hauling a trailer full of hay to the hay barn where she would load it onto the conveyor that would bring it up into the barn where her two sons were waiting to pile and stack it.
In addition to being a farmer’s wife, she was also a fire fighter’s wife. One of her responsibilities in that role was to answer the “Red Phone”. When there was a fire call, it would ring into the “Red Phone” that they had in their home, she would take the call and then dispatch the fire department.
In Sara’s later years she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren, her great grandchildren and her great-great grandchildren how to build fairy houses in the woods on their homestead. Sara also enjoyed Maine Lighthouses, going to the ocean, pussy willows and a good cup of tea.
In addition to her loving husband Sara is survived by her two sons, David Harriman and wife Karen of Readfield and Donn Harriman and his wife Jill of Readfield. Seven grandchildren; Ann, Cyndy, Rebecca, Katherine, Natalie, Emily and Ethan; seven great-grandchildren; Alexis, Mark, Angelina, Jordyn, Cyara, MacKenzie and Teagan and three great-great grandchildren; Nyla, Althea and Rosie.
