Larry Savage
SKOWHEGAN – Larry Savage passed away unexpectedly while working on April 28, 2023, in Skowhegan, at the age of 77. His family and friends are deeply saddened by his sudden death.
He was born on July 22, 1945 in Portland, son of Lawrence Savage and Althea (Lancaster). A four-sport letterman, he graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1963 along with lifelong best friend Donald “Skip” Young. They shared the affectionate nickname, “Horace”. He went on to continue his studies at both Bentley College and the University of Maine at Orono.
After college he returned to Skowhegan in 1968 to work with his father. The company which he helped his father run for years, he himself took over and transformed into Savage Oil. Expansion of this business included three convenience stores and service to 4500 customers. This company was dissolved in 2001 and reopened in Bingham in 2006. His love for the growth of this oil business and his rental properties was his life’s passion.
Survived by his former spouse, Laurel Savage (Lewia), they were married for 37 years. Children and family including Carlton and Tara Savage, Dr. Wilson and Kristina Savage Park, Michael and Rachel Savage; grandchildren Sean, Ryan, Joshua, Kaden, Riley and Camden; his girlfriend, Leah Hinkley and her children Johnny and Jessica; sister-in-law, Cheri Savage and her children, Jennifer and Jethro Zimmermann, Christian and Krista Savage, Ben and Laura Flood, John and Ashlee Savage; and nine great-grandnieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his 6-year-old sister, Connie, brother, David; father, Lawrence, mother, Althea; and cousin Danny McGowan.
Hobbies included love for antique cars. He restored his father’s first 1946 Oil Truck for car shows and parades. Loved playing cards, Wolfman Jack and Willie Nelson music. Enjoyed deer hunting in Kingsbury and fly fishing at Lost Pond. Enjoyed time with family instilling life lessons. Volunteered to coach local youth sports teams. A true lover of life, always ready with a fantastic sense of humor that all Mainers hold dear.
Funeral services Sunday June 11, at 1 p.m. Federated Church. Burial following Southside Cemetery Skowhegan.
