The Benton Alewife Festival is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Benton Town Office in Riverside Park, 1279 Clinton Ave.
The festival is a celebration of Benton’s annual alewife harvest and successful fish ladder program, with a record 5.7 million in 2018, according to a news release from June Caron with the festival.
Free activities include tours of the fish lift at the dam (the shuttle leaves from the Town Office), a walk/hike to the dam with Kennebec/Messalonskee Trails, an opportunity to meet Smokey Bear and Forest Rangers from the Maine Forest Service, music by the bluegrass band “The Oystermen” and free food.
For more information, call Caron at 207-680-6173 and visit the event’s Facebook page.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
