MOUNT VERNON – Susan A. Friend, 90, passed away on June 8, 2023, at Maine General Rehabilitation and long-term care at Glenridge.

Susan was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Mekitta) Friend. She grew up in Cleveland and Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and resided there for most of her life until moving to Maine three years ago. She was a graduate of East High School in Cleveland. Susan went on to further her education, graduating from the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Susan was an accomplished talented artist. She was known for her ceramics and Lapidary as well as silver and semi-precious stones. She also worked with Three C Trucking for many years until her retirement. After retirement Susan worked mornings opening the YMCA in Cleveland.

Susan was a longtime devoted, active member of the Calvary Lutheran Church where she was active with the Lutheran Urban Community Ministry and served as treasurer and secretary of the church for many years. She also worked at the Calvary Church Food Bank and the afterschool group program sponsored by the Lutheran Church. She started the community garden in Cleveland. She hosted businesspeople from other countries who wanted to come to Cleveland to learn about business practices. She later transferred to the Peace Lutheran Church in Cleveland where she was a dedicated member for many years. Susan was also active with the East Cleveland Theater; belonged to a local playreaders group; was active with Friends of Metropolitan Parks and she loved gardening.

Susan is survived by her loving and devoted sister, Margot L. Coryell of Mount Vernon; as well as many nieces, nephews and a grandniece including Roland Coryell, Gilman Coryell and Lucy Coryell. She is also survived by many friends in the Cleveland, Ohio area.

In honoring Susan’s wishes funeral services and burial will be held privately.
