Winthrop Maine Historical Society plans to host a talk about braiding rugs by Nancy Penniman Young from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center, 107 Main St.

Young, who has been braiding rugs for more than 65 years, splits her time between Pennsylvania and Maine. Along with her husband, she co-hosted Waters Edge Braiding Camp at her home in Winthrop for many years. When inexpensive synthetic rugs became available, hand braiding a rug was becoming obsolete, according to a news release from Mary Richards with the society.
Being one of the few people teaching it in the country, her camp attracted students from all over the U.S. and as far away as Australia and Switzerland.
Young will bring a few of her smaller rugs along with a sample of what she is working on to show how rugs are made. This will be followed up by a comprehensive video Fiber Arts made of her two years ago.
The next society business meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at the history and heritage center.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
