Richard Joseph “Joey” Duguay Jr.
WINTHROP – Joey passed away July 1, 2023 at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice House in Auburn with three of his good friends by his side.
Joey was born on Jan. 25, 1952 in Waterville, the son of Richard Joseph Duguay and Anna Celia (Charette) Duguay. He was baptized on Feb. 17, 1952 at Church of Notre Dame in Waterville.
Joey was a graduate of Berlin High School in Berlin, N.H., and went on to join the United States Airforce, stationed at Loring Air Force Base, where he served his Country from 1972 until his honorable discharge in 1976.
Joey was a man of many interests. He was a sharpshooter, ballroom dancer, hockey coach and referee as well as an avid gardener.
Joey was a member of Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. Post #40 in Winthrop, where he spent a lot of his time. He enjoyed cooking with other veterans at the annual 4th of July chicken barbecue, and leaves behind a family of friends. He also loved camping at Mac’s Camping Area in Poland, where he spent summers with several of his friends.
Earlier this year, on April 30, Joey made what he called the trip of a lifetime. He was sent to Washington, D.C. on Honor Flight of Maine with other fellow veterans.
Joey worked for Concord Bus Lines for several years, where he made lifetime friends and was recognized for the several letters of thanks the company received from his passengers.
He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Daniel R. Duguay; sister, Irene Mailloux; and his faithful companion, Mr. Katt.
Joey is survived by his sister, Pauline Whitmore of Bangor; and his little dog, Pookie, who was his companion for the last months of his life.
Joey’s life will be celebrated in a graveside committal service with full military honors at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 19 at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta. The celebration will continue at 1 p.m. at the Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. Post #40 American Legion on Bowdoin Street in Winthrop.
