MERCER — An autopsy has determined a New Hampshire man died in a camper fire that authorities believe occurred more than a week before his body was discovered, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety said.

The Office of State Fire Marshal was contacted about the fire on Bradley Lane about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a statement to the news media Monday.

Norridgewock firefighters who responded to the scene reported they had found a body inside the camper.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy Monday and officials identified the man as Wayne Bouchard, 64, of Deerfield, New Hampshire, Moss said.

Bouchard owned the camper, which was destroyed in the fire. It was the kind of camper that is towed by a vehicle, she said. It was parked on land owned by Bouchard and his family.

She said Tuesday that a family member discovered the debris after not hearing from Bouchard for several days and traveling to the property to check on him. Authorities are trying to determine what day the fire occurred, she said.

Officials have not released a cause of the fire and the investigation is ongoing.
