ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Gunnar Henderson and Ryan O’Hearn homered as the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Sunday to take three of four in a weekend series.
The Orioles, who started July 6 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay, have a two-game lead over the Rays after winning for the 12th time in 15 games.
Reliever Mike Baumann (7-0) walked two over 2 2/3 hitless innings and Félix Bautista gave up ninth-inning singles to Manuel Margot and Yandy Díaz before getting to his 28th save as four Baltimore pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Baltimore pitchers walked six and hit two batters.
Bautista ended it by striking out Wander Franco with runners on first and third.
Díaz homered for the Rays, who are an AL-worse 4-14 in July. This the first time Tampa Bay has lost a home series to the Orioles since June 2017.
YANKEES 8, ROYALS 5: Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run since May 20 and went 4 for 4 as New York beat the Kansas City at Yankee Stadium to complete its third series sweep of the season.
Gleyber Torres’ two-run homer sparked New York’s four-run first inning against Jordan Lyles (1-12). Torres extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games but exited in the seventh because of left hip tightness.
Luis Severino (2-4) won for the first time in four starts since June 24.
TWINS 5, WHITE SOX 4: Ryan Jeffers hit a two-out RBI single in the 12th inning to cap a relentless late rally by Minnesota that secured a victory and a series sweep over Chicago in Minneapolis.
ASTROS 3, ATHLETICS 2: Mauricio Dubón homered with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, and Houston held on to win in Oakland, California.
Yainer Diaz had two hits including his 11th home run for the Astros, who have won four of five and remain 3 games behind the Rangers in the AL West.
BLUE JAYS 4, MARINERS 3: Pinch-hitter Santiago Espinal singled home the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning and closer Jordan Romano escaped a ninth-inning jam as Toronto won in Seattle to prevent a three-game sweep.
Seattle put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth, but Romano struck out Julio Rodríguez on a 2-2 slider and retired Eugenio Suárez on a flyout for his 27th save.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Brandon Belt each homered for the second straight game, helping the Blue Jays rebound from blowing late leads in one-run losses Friday and Saturday.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
BRAVES 4, BREWERS 2: Ozzie Albies hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to end Milwaukee’s run of bullpen dominance and give Atlanta a win on the road.
Albies’ 407-foot shot to left center on a first-pitch sinker from Elvis Peguero (1-3) ended a string of 28 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings by Brewers relievers. Albies’ opposite-field drive brought home Orlando Arcia and Ronald Acuña Jr., who had singled earlier in the inning.
CUBS 7, CARDINALS 2: Cody Bellinger homered and drove in three runs, Jameson Taillon pitched into the sixth inning and Chicago won at home.
Dansby Swanson had two hits and Yan Gomes drove in two runs as Chicago closed out a 6-4 homestand. The Cubs won the last three games of their four-game set against the Cardinals.
MARLINS 3, ROCKIES 2: Luis Arraez singled home the winning run with the bases loaded in the 10th inning and host Miami ended an eight-game losing streak with a win over Colorado.
REDS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 3: Elly De La Cruz hit his first career leadoff homer and Nick Senzel connected for a two-run shot, helping Cincinnati sweep visiting Arizona.
NATIONALS 6, GIANTS 1: Lane Thomas matched a Nationals record with four stolen bases, and Washington recorded its first series sweep in nearly two years with a win at home.
INTERLEAGUE
RANGERS 8, DODGERS 4: Jonah Heim and Leody Taveras each had a two-run double, and Texas overcame Max Muncy’s first-inning grand slam to beat Los Angeles in Arlington, Texas, and avoid a three-game sweep in a matchup of division leaders.
Heim cut LA’s lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the first before RBI singles from Marcus Semien, Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Jung put Texas in front in the second.
ANGELS 7, PIRATES 5: Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 36th homer in the two-way superstar’s final home game before the trade deadline, and Los Angeles wrapped up a strong homestand with a victory over Pittsburgh in Anaheim, California.
Ohtani drilled a low line drive to center field in the first inning, giving him 24 homers in his last 45 games. Only five other major leaguers entered Sunday with more than 24 homers for the entire season, but Ohtani has rekindled his June power surge after the All-Star break with four homers during the Angels’ nine-game homestand.
PHILLIES 8, GUARDIANS 5: Bryce Harper drove in the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning single and flashed more solid defense in his second career start at first base, leading Philadelphia to a win in Cleveland to avoid a three-game sweep.
Phillies closer Craig Kimbrel (6-1) blew his first save of the season in 17 chances when David Fry hit a solo homer with two outs in the ninth to tie it 4-all. The home run came on a 1-0 pitch and narrowly cleared the 19-foot wall in left field.
TIGERS 3, PADRES 1: Spencer Torkelson and Andy Ibañez homered, and Detroit won at home to avoid a weekend sweep.
NOTES
ANGELS: Shohei Ohtani’s next scheduled mound start for the Los Angeles Angels has been pushed back one day to Friday in Toronto.
Angels Manager Phil Nevin announced the decision Sunday on Ohtani, who had been tentatively scheduled to take his semiregular turn in the rotation on Thursday in Detroit.
Nevin said the Angels pushed back Ohtani to give him six days of rest between mound starts, but also to shift the rotation so Ohtani doesn’t have to make his ensuing start on a Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta. Nevin is worried that the heat and humidity in that day game against the Braves could cause a reoccurrence of the finger blister that bothered Ohtani earlier this month but has since healed.
DODGERS: Los Angeles is backing off on the throwing program for injured ace Clayton Kershaw, postponing a bullpen session while saying the left-hander hasn’t had any setbacks with his shoulder.
RANGERS: Texas will skip All-Star right-hander Nathan Eovaldi for one turn through the rotation as part of a plan to give all their starters some rest.
YANKEES: Aaron Judge faced live pitching for the first time since tearing a ligament in his right toe on June 3.
In a simulated game against Jonathan Loáisiga, who is rehabbing from right elbow surgery, Judge saw 16 pitches. He did not put any balls in play but fouled off four pitches, including one to the upper deck behind home plate.
