Donald H. Coulombe

AUGUSTA – Donald H. Coulombe, of Augusta, passed away on Aug. 30, 2023. He was 93. His full name at birth was Joseph Hilaire Donald Coulombe but he always preferred to be called “Donald”.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1929 in Augusta to Alice Ouellette and Theodore Joseph “Blackie” Coulombe. Donald worked for the Augusta News Company for 24 years and subsequently was self-employed for about 30 years. He was a skilled metal scrapper for many years and had a talent for doing odd jobs. He was a Life Member of the Elks Lodge for more than 30 years.

Donald married Mary Ellen Gunning in February 1952 and had two children, Michael Donald, and Theodore Joseph.

He lived at Glenridge Gardens for 27 years. During that time, he had many loyal friends including Harold, Amy, Big Boy Hunter, and Hanna Ames. Amy faithfully delivered his newspaper to him every day. Hunter shoveled him out in the winter as well as his dad, Harold. Tanya was his friend from the Circle K who made him pizzas and sandwiches every Friday and had them delivered. He loved sharing his pizzas with Hunter and Noah, Nacia Miller’s son. He called them his boys. Renee from McDonalds was his very special friend. The maintenance men, Tim and Ryan at Glenridge would come every day to check on him if Nacia or Amy were not home.

Donald was predeceased by his first wife, Mary, and also his loving companion, Sharon Clary, who passed in 2014; his sisters Lillian Bechard, Joanne Gray, Pauline Beaulieu, Muriel Cloutier, his brother, Richard Coulombe; his son, Michael Donald Coulombe whom died in a tragic accident in Portland in 1996; and also his beloved dog, Morgan.

He is survived by his son, Theodore Joseph Coulombe; one grandson, Theodore Joseph Barry, two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Ashley Coulombe; two great-grandsons, Joseph Theodore Barry and Anthony Joseph, and one great-granddaughter, Kennedy Jayne Barry.

Donald’s family wishes to express their profound gratitude to Nacia Miller, his neighbor and good friend who looked after him for nine years. They also wanted to thank his kind neighbors and friends who also looked after him in his later years. Donald’s family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the Capitol City Manor for making him comfortable in his last days.

A public visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St. in Augusta, where a service will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Manchester, all are welcome to attend.
