MANCHESTER – Gladys Gugan, 86, passed away on Sept. 8, 2023, after complications of dementia. She was born in Middlesbrough, England on March 30, 1937, a daughter of Charles and Ada (Leng) Brown.

Gladys received her education in England and on Feb. 24, 1958, she married David Gugan. While living in England, Gladys was employed as a supervisor for Marks & Spencer. After David’s service in the Army, he and Gladys ventured to the United States on the Queen Mary. After living in Augusta for 10 years, the two settled in Manchester, Maine, making a happy life together.

Gladys was a generous person who enjoyed giving to others. Gladys was also a dedicated volunteer at MaineGeneral, where she earned her 4,000-hour pin. She also ran the coffee shop at the hospital.

Gladys enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. Though her adventures are too many to list, she especially enjoyed trips to Antigua and the annual trip home to England. Gladys was also an excellent cook.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, Walter Brown.

She is lovingly survived by her husband of 65 years, David Gugan; sister, Audrey Hurren; several nieces and nephews in England; and close friends, Tom and Vicki Oliver of Farmingdale, Audrey Johnson,  Margaret Mead and Rita and Keith Vester in England and Duncan and Margaret McGilvray in Athens, GA.
