There is a lack of handicap parking and also a lot of parking illegally in the downtown area of Waterville. I’ve counted the number of handicap parking spaces on the new redesign of lower Main Street and there are very few. There is one if you’re coming out of the Concourse that the same vehicle is often parked in. Then right behind it parked on the striped lines (which is against the law) so someone with a rear entry access door cannot get into their vehicle.
What needs to happen is signs at each handicap parking space so people will not ignore them. People just don’t care anymore and it’s always about them. A couple of weeks ago I took a ride down Main Street and there was a vehicle parked on the striped lines with a small utility trailer that blocked the ramp so someone in a wheelchair or mobility scooter would have to go way out of their way just to get onto the sidewalk.
Another problem is that come the middle of August until the middle of May it’s close to impossible to find any parking in and around the Concourse because of so many out-of-state vehicles taking up parking spaces at times when a certain handbook says these vehicles cannot park there. Yet nothing is ever done about it, year after year after year.
